Cadeaux

Sally Ball

to be together but not at the same time
        —Fred Moten

you’ll touch what my hands have touched
        —Yannis Ritsos

I should have left
you a gift

something to stumble on
maybe in anger

or in a hurry
that stops you

and undoes
a piece of the harm

of today.
One of our mussels

(still tasting like salt),
a sycamore leaf,

fancy shampoo.
And I meant to bring

something to sleep in,
of yours, of you.
