Once      though long
abandoned      the house
in the house remained
possible
                        —now the sides are black
                        now the front porch
opens to hall      now the cored roof
and eaves lurch toward clay      the same red
                        clay as always
red skin of the earth
above which      these slow
changed features
—here's where you would appear
so I would appear
to allow it
                        the poem
                        after all a structure
like any other
changed      too little
between each pass
to be recognized
as wholly      uninhabitable
by anyone
